Seuss on the Loose: An Intergrated Unit
This Kindergarten unit – designed for an inclusion classroom – focuses on English language arts, mathematics and science standards. During this unit, students explore Dr. Seuss’ works to master rhyming, and identifying number symbols, number words, and details in texts. The unit concludes with an individual writing assignment and self-assessment. Throughout the unit, students with special needs receive social and emotional support to ensure they both progress towards their IEP goals and master the standards.

English Arts
Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
Science
Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare the similarities and differences in groups of organisms.

Cobb County SchoolsDebbie Chrzanowski is currently a Kindergarten Special Education teacher at Baker Elementary School in Acworth, GA. Ms. Chrzanowksi has a Bachelor of Science in Education from Georgia Southern University and was a National Board Certified Teacher in Exceptional Needs for ten years. Her best piece of teaching advice is to set high expectations for every student and be there when they are experiencing difficulty. Each day is a new experience with new challenges and fun times!
