Fuel costs could drive up Georgia Power bills by another 17%

Georgia Power Co. bills could go up another 17% in June to cover the higher costs of natural gas and coal. The unit of Atlanta-based Southern Co. told regulators Tuesday that it needs to collect billions more to pay for the fuel it burns to generate electricity for its 2.7 million customers.

Solar power net metering got a boost. But incentives still lag for many homeowners, advocates say

Getting solar panels installed on your home can decrease your carbon footprint, but it can be expensive. One way to lower that cost is by selling some of the excess power generated by those panels back to the grid. That's called net metering. GPB's Peter Biello spoke with Dr. Marilyn Brown, a professor of sustainable systems in the School of Public Policy at Georgia Tech about the policy.

The Georgia Public Service Commission approved a $1.8 billion Georgia Power Co. rate increase Tuesday, raising rates by 12% over three years. The move came after four commissioners tweaked a settlement between the utility and commission staff to give the company more of what it wanted.

Georgia Power deal sets $1.8B rate increase over 3 years

Georgia Power Co. and regulatory staff have reached an agreement that would give the electric utility a $1.8 billion rate increase over three years. That's a little above the midpoint between the $2.9 billion that the electric utility proposed and the $529 million that staff said was justified.
