Ever since "Downton Abbey" show creators announced in March that the sixth season would be the show’s last, the search for the next Downton has been on. "Poldark" which premieres Sunday, June 21 at 9 pm, Australian import "A Place to Call Home" which currently runs on Fridays on GPB at 9 pm and "Indian Summers" coming in the fall could possibly fit the bill.

Though they lack the upstairs-downstairs dynamic of "Downton", they contain the pinch of class struggle, dizzying plot twists and compelling characters that "Downton" fans have grown to love. Here a mini guide to these new period piece dramas:

Poldark

What is it about?: British Captain Ross Poldark (played by tousled haired and beautiful jawed Aidan Turner from “The Hobbit” movies) returns to Cornwall after fighting in the American Revolutionary War to find his world upended. His father is dead; the love of his life is about to marry his pompous cousin and his lands are a mess!

A pinch of class struggle: Miner’s daughter and run away Demelda joins the Poldark household to shed light on the poor folks working in the mines to the people who own said mines (namely Poldark’s family.) Plus she steals Ross’ heart.

Fun facts: Poldark is based on the novels of the late Winston Graham. This series is a remake. The original aired from 1975-1977 and starred Robin Ellis. The show was so popular back then that he was mobbed Beatles-style by frenzied fans. Ellis pops up in the new version as Reverend Halse.

A Place To Call Home currently airing Fridays at 9 pm

What is it about?: Set in the early 1950s, Sister Sarah Adams (and the title sister is used loosely) journeys home to Sydney from a life as a nurse abroad to face an estranged mother and tragic news. Along the way she gets involved with the rich Bligh family through an ocean liner voyage and is hired by them to work at a hospital near their estate. Adams’ personal drama is soon eclipsed by the Bligh’s crazy secrets.

A pinch of class struggle: Adams has to grin and bear it as a sort of nursemaid to the overbearing and patronizing Bligh matriarch Elizabeth. This showcases the changing relationship between the “help” and their bosses during this period.

Fun Fact: The third season of the series is currently being filmed.

Indian Summers: Coming to the fall line up

What is it about?: In the summer of 1932, while India dreams of independence, British leaders cling to power. They descend on Simla, a little town on the foothills of the Himalayas that has been turned into a little England. But they soon learn that their way of life will be changed by a nation ready to exert its freedom.

A pinch of class struggle: Actually more than a pinch! British politicos socialize with Indian civil servants. A tea plantation heir is exposed to the plight of workers. The Indian caste system is on full display.

Fun Fact: Though set in India, the series was filmed in Malaysia.
