The lady who plays Cora, the Countess of Grantham, can sing. When not shooting elaborate dinner scenes on “Downton Abbey”, Elizabeth McGovern rocks out with her country/folk band Sadie and The Hotheads.

It was a no brainer, then to ask her to sing a few holiday classics for the “Christmas at Downton Abbey” album. (Yes there is such a thing!)

McGovern lends her steady voice to two of the 45 tracks, backed by the Budapest City Orchestra. She sings “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” solo then duets with Lady Mary suitor Julian Ovenden on “The First Noel.”

Ovenden, an established singer and stage star easily croons “O Holy Night,” “The Sussex Carol” and “Silent Night” and pairs with young classical soprano Katie Marshall for “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” Even when he sings standards, he can make ladies swoon.

Here is a sample. Listen to McGovern and Ovenden sing.

The album in a sense gives a glimpse of what a Christmas concert at “Downton Abbey” would sound like so it’s a grand affair. Imagine Dame Kiri Te Kanawa returning to serenade with “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem.” (She does those and more.) Imagine the Choir of Kings College performing “Ding, Dong! Merrily on High”.

No British Christmas album is complete without a reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) does the honors as the last track. Christmas at Downton Album is available on iTunes and Amazon. If you get it, share your armchair review. What do you think of Lady Cora’s singing?
