Downton Abbey has scored several Emmy nominations. The PBS drama was recognized in several key categories and has been pitted against some stiff competition.

Downton goes head to head against HBO juggernaut Game of Thrones, AMC’s Breaking Bad and True Detective among others.

Michelle Dockery vys for Outstanding Actress in a Drama against Kerry Washington from Scandal and Claire Danes from Homeland.

Jim Carter was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama alongside Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones and Josh Charles from The Good Wife. Meanwhile Paul Giamatti received an Outstanding Guest Actor nod for playing Uncle Harold.

Perhaps Downton’s biggest competitor is itself. Maggie Smith and Joanne Froggart were both nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

Froggart’s nod was expected as she received glowing remarks for how she handled Anna’s rape storyline.

Dame Maggie Smith was nominated in the Outsanding Supporting Actress category in 2013.

Sherlock vs Watson at the Emmys?

Fellow Masterpiece hit Sherlock was also nominated in major categories that pit the series stars against each other.

Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the great detective and Martin Freeman who plays his partner in crime Watson were both honored with Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Movie nominations. Freeman’s nomination is for his work on the show Fargo though.

He was nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor category though for playing Watson.

Sherlock was also nominated for Outstanding Made for TV Movie.

The Primetime Emmy Awards air August 25 on NBC.
