Jimmy Carter's 1976 presidential campaign headquarters sits in quiet downtown Plains, Ga., Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023. Carter, who is 98 and receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, won the White House after beginning the campaign as a little-known Georgia governor. But the unlikely nature of his bid depended on many turns in his life well before 1976.

Jimmy Carter: White House rise depended on twists before '76

As a little-known Georgia governor, Jimmy Carter took his family and friends to Iowa and New Hampshire, where "the Peanut Brigade" set the modern standard for a retail campaign and helped elect Carter as the 39th president. But the long odds weren't just about 1976 for Carter, who is 98 and now receiving end-of-life care at his home in Plains, Georgia.

Guinea worm eradication effort enters 'most difficult' phase

The Carter Center said Tuesday that only 13 human cases of Guinea worm disease were reported worldwide last year. After decades of progress, the eradication program's director cautioned the end phase of the global effort to eradicate the parasitic disease will be "the most difficult."

Rosalynn Carter turns 95 Thursday, and her birthday is being marked with butterflies. A friend says the wife of former President Jimmy Carter has a fascination with butterflies dating back to her childhood in Plains, Georgia. That interest led to the formation of the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, which was established after the former first lady grew concerned about the future of butterflies.

1 in 5 Georgians quit jobs to be caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's why

To better understand caregivers' experiences over the last two years, the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers conducted a national survey, which was released Sept. 28.

The report, Working While Caring: A National Survey of Caregiver Stress in the US Workforce, found that a fifth of working Georgians had to quit their jobs to provide family care.
