Josephine Bennett and I have been sharing our adventures in fostering, adopting and helping shelter animals through this blog. On Wednesday, June 1 at 7 p.m., you’ll see the work of others who share this passion in the special Shelter Me: Hearts and Paws.

We air this series every year and in this sixth installment, hosted by actress Kristen Bell, you’ll meet the cartoonist behind the strip “Mutt” - Patrick McDonnell. You’ll follow him as he takes a pad and pen to the Animal Center of New York City to find inspiration for his stories.

You’ll also take a personal journey with a shelter pet from the moment she enters the rescue facility to the day she is adopted.

Get Involved Through ASPCA 150 Days Of Rescue

If our stories and the ones you’ll witness on Shelter Me inspire you to help a rescue animal but you don’t know where to start, the ASPCA can assist. (Full disclosure: I donate to the ASPCA).

In honor of the organization’s 150th anniversary celebration which kicked off last month, it has started a nationwide campaign to encourage animal lovers to give their time or money to help pets or would be pets in need.

The campaign lasts until September 7, with the goal of reaching 150,000 actions for animals in 150 days. You can participate by volunteering at a local shelter, donating money or pet items or by adopting a shelter animal. Log in your actions at aspca.org/150days. If you do, you’ll also have the opportunity to nominate your favorite animal shelter to receive a grant prize of $150,000.
