Metro Atlanta has become a sneaky good tech hub—in fact it was named one of the top-5 tech cities in America—and it’s about to get even better as Sonnen, one of Tesla’s chief rivals, announced a multi-million dollar investment that will add more than 100 new positions in the next couple of years.

The German company already has a 26,000-square foot facility in Tucker designs, develops and manufactures residential power storage systems. The location for the new build hasn’t been made clear, though it will be in the metro area.

The plan is to build power storage systems—AKA batteries—for various uses. What manufacturing looks like in America today is totally different that where it was 30 years ago, and this is a perfect example. In 2017 we build electric batteries for vehicles, homes, and offices. Sure, that’s different, but it’s still manufacturing, and these positions will be highly sought in the next 18-24 months when they come online.

One of the reasons Atlanta and its metro area have become so popular among technology companies is its close proximity to Georgia Tech’s talent base. In fact, Sonnen’s Vice President of R&D Carlos Repestro is a Georgia Tech alumnus.
