As a former social studies educator, I know how difficult it can be to create lessons that incorporate STEM in content areas where science, technology, engineering and math do not seem to easily fit. If you are looking for a little inspiration, then check out The Georgia Ballet’s production of Coppélia.

The Georgia Ballet’s season opening performance, Coppélia, will be featured at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center in Roswell, Georgia, October 9-11, with a school field trip show on October 9. This ballet centers around an inventor named Dr. Coppélius, his life-sized doll, a village boy named Franz, who believes he has fallen in love with the doll, and Swanhilda, who Franz ultimately realizes is his true love.

Not only is The Georgia Ballet bringing this comedic love story to life through the art of dance, it has also created an accompanying enrichment resource for grades K-3, complete with a STEM lesson about robotics! The enrichment resource also includes a brief synopsis of the play, post performance activities, and information about the original composer and choreographer.

“The school field-trip shows, accompanied by the STEM-related study guides, are a great way for schools to give students a quality live arts experience, while being able to relate the activity to their studies,” states Susan Zealy, Georgia Ballet Development Director.

This resource is sure to promote critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration among your students while simultaneously showing them that STEM is everywhere, including the arts.
