Georgia Power is preparing to dispose of more than two million tons of toxic coal ash currently stored in ponds at Plant Arkwright in Macon, the power company announced to neighbors of the plant Feb. 18 during an informational session.

A McIntosh County citizen group that’s fought to reduce herbicide use and an oyster hatchery on Skidaway Island are among the 13 entities the Georgia Water Coalition recognized Tuesday for their positive impacts on the state’s waterways. 

The Georgia Water Coalition released its annual "Dirty Dozen" report highlighting the issues threatening the health of Georgia's waterways. This year's dozen includes rivers, creeks, aquifers, streams and swamps.

The House has signed off on a controversial measure that opponents say will limit the public’s ability to float and paddle on Georgia’s smaller waterways.

A 2023 law was meant to reiterate that the state owns the riverbed under navigable rivers. But it did not define "navigable."

The amended EPA rule is to comply with a Supreme Court ruling this year that narrowed the scope of the Clean Water Act and the agency's power to regulate waterways and wetlands.
