Georgia House Rules Chairman Richard Smith of Columbus dies from flu at age 78

One of the most influential members of the Georgia House of Representatives has died. The House Speaker's office says state Rep. Richard Smith, a Columbus Republican, died at his home from complications of the flu before dawn Tuesday.

Georgia seaports handled a record number of automobiles in 2023 while container trade dropped 16%

The Georgia Ports Authority says it handled a record number of automobiles on its docks last year. The state agency reported Tuesday that more than 775,000 autos and heavy machinery units moved through the Port of Brunswick in the 2023 calendar year.

Prisoners in the US are part of a hidden workforce linked to hundreds of popular food brands

In a sweeping two-year investigation, The Associated Press found goods linked to prisoners wind up in the supply chains of everything from Frosted Flakes cereal and Ball Park hot dogs to Gold Medal flour and Coca-Cola. The prisoners who help produce these goods are disproportionately people of color.

Shock, grief and mourning for 3 Georgia-based US soldiers killed in Middle East drone strike

Shock and grief are rippling across Georgia after the U.S. Defense Department announced three Army Reserve soldiers from the state were killed in a weekend drone strike in Jordan. Narcan to 988: Recovery is possible with help from friends, certified peer specialists

Mental health advocates, peers, key leaders, and legislators from across Georgia gathered last week at Georgia's state Capitol asking to be involved with each legislative/gubernatorial commission, study group, or panel created to advise about mental health. They also want lawmakers to bolster the state's mental health workforce shortage by expanding the certified peer specialist (CPS) workforce and supporting a salary increase in parity with other service providers.
