An expansion to Georgia’s school voucher program is getting another shot this year after passing the House Education Committee on party lines Wednesday.

On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, the Georgia Diaper Bank Coalition hosted the first Diaper Need Awareness Day at the Georgia Capitol. The event served to draw attention to rising costs of diapers and the families in the state who are struggling to afford these essential child care items.

A controversial amendment introduced this week by Sen. Ben Watson (R – Savannah) during a committee meeting would ban puberty blockers for transgender minors, including those already receiving the therapy. Critics of the amendment say that it steps on parental rights.

Georgia state Senate Republicans advanced language that would ban puberty-blocking medication for transgender minors through a key committee Monday after grafting it to a bill requiring overdose reversal drugs in government buildings.

The state’s top economic development official expressed disappointment Monday with electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian’s decision to delay building a new plant east of Atlanta but said the company remains committed to Georgia.

The legislature focused on a range of issues from crime to space. Plus, a local sports celebrity visited the Gold Dome. 

Georgia tax collections continued to fall last month, and even the gasoline sales tax failed to lift the state out of the red.

Both chambers moved through the rules calendar quickly to pass as many bills as possible before Crossover Day. And Senate Minority Leader Gloria Butler announced her retirement.
