Atlanta's Airport Offers Travel Tips For Memorial Day Weekend

Nearly two million passengers are expected to travel through ATL over the Memorial Day holiday weekend beginning Thursday, May 23, through Tuesday, May 28.

As thousands of people prepare to travel during Memorial Day weekend, the world's busiest airport is preparing for major congestion.

The travel period begins Thursday and runs through Tuesday, May 28.

At a recent press conference at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, TSA spokesperson Mary Leftridge Byrd estimated that 87,000 people will be traveling on Thursday.

On Friday, Byrd says around 93,000 passengers are expected. And on Memorial Day itself, an estimated 87,000 people will be moving through the airport

Officials suggest arriving two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international travel.

Travelers are also being warned to double check their luggage before bringing any illicit items through security.

The TSA said more than 100 guns have already been confiscated this year at Atlanta’s airport, the most in the United States.

With the ongoing measles outbreak still a concern throughout the country, international travelers should check Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisories for any warnings.

“Measles is spreading globally at an increased rate in many countries,” CDC spokesperson Nancy Messonnier said.

“[That] includes many common summer travel destinations. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is by getting vaccinated.”

The next few days are expected to be the busiest at Atlanta's airport since more than 100,000 people traveled through the hub following Super Bowl 53 in February.
