GPB's Leah Fleming interview pharmacologist and recovering drug addict Sam Snodgrass

Imagine that you haven't eaten in several days. What would you be thinking about? Most likely, food would be on your mind!

The craving for sustenance that you would feel is actually the brain’s mechanism that drives you to survive

That's how many people describe what its like to be addicted to opiates.

Pharmacologist Sam Snodgrass is one person who knows about that craving all too well.

At first, he studied the effects of drugs on the brain. But then, he became addicted to heroin and is now a recovering methadone addict.

GPB spoke with Snodgrass from his home in Little Rock, Arkansas about how addiction can transform our brains.
