Live Exploration: Georgia's Forests

Take your students on an interactive journey through the working forests of Georgia to learn about forest ecosystems, food webs, and life cycles, as well as forestry management processes, career opportunities, and much more. Trees mean business in Georgia! Discover the ways that trees impact Georgia's economy, how they provide thousands of jobs across the state, and are managed sustainably.

Trees play an important part in our ecosystem, but we often overlook them in our daily routines. Trees provide animal habitat, control erosion, regulate temperature, store carbon, and create oxygen — which we can’t live without! This activity challenges girls to take a closer look at the trees that surround them.

Forests protect our soil from erosion, acting as a sponge and filter. Trees drop leaves, branches, bark, and seeds to decompose and add needed nutrients to the soil. The cycle is complete when the roots of a tree are fed by components in the soil and the tree grows more leaves to create more organic matter. Learn about the soil cycle in this video segment.

Forest management is very important when it comes to keeping forests healthy. There are many ways to manage a forest, such as monitoring the land and wildlife and burning with fire when necessary. Make That Paper: Careers in Forestry is an online game designed to help high school students learn about the forestry industry and career employability skills. In the game, students apply forestry science knowledge to select the optimal solution to various industry-related scenarios.

Georgia's sustainable forestry initiative provides consumers with confidence that the timber sourced from Georgia's forests is done in a way that is cognizant of environmental impacts and forest health. Foresters work to control erosion on site, maintain a healthy forest, and regenerate after harvest. This industry regulation also helps maintain water quality and biodiversity in the forest.

Use this media gallery to explore how wood is incentivized as a renewable resource, even though it emits more greenhouse gas than coal. In the accompanying classroom activity, students conduct an inquiry-based investigation of fuel carbon dioxide emissions.
