It was a record-setting week for the football programs at Burke County and Houston County. Not only did they both win their second-round playoff game and advance to the state quarterfinals, each one reached an impressive milestone.

Burke County recorded the program’s 300th victory and Houston County won its 200th game.

Burke County beat Laney for its 300th victory.

Burke County defeated Laney 49-28 on Friday to reach its historic win total. Coach Franklin Stephens’ club is 11-1 and ranked No. 7 in the GPB Class 2A poll. Stephens is 19-4 in his two seasons as head coach.

The Bears began playing football in 1987 and have a record of 300-135-1. That includes 10 region championships and one state title in 2011. The Waynesboro school has made the playoffs every year since 2006.

Eric Parker is the school’s winningest coach. He spent 16 seasons leading Burke County and compiled a record of 140-52 with seven region titles and one Class 3A championship. Mike Falleur spent three seasons at the school, went 26-10 from 1996-1998 and took the 1997 team to the state final, where they lost to Thomas County Central. Tom Temple went 42-14 in five seasons from 1989-93 with one region championship.

Houston County defeated Lakeside-Evans 63-12 on Friday to secure the program’s 200th win. The Warner Robins school began playing football in 1991 and has gone 200-176-1 with one region championship.

Current coach Jeremy Edwards is in his third season and has compiled a 27-10 record; the Bears are 8-4 this season. The school’s winningest coach is Doug Johnson, who started the program. Johnson went 99-78-1 in 16 seasons from 1991-2006. Von Lassiter was 35-12 with a region championship in four seasons from 2013-16.
