This week’s edition of Football Fridays in Georgia features a Class 7A semifinal battle between Region 5 champion Walton and Camden County, which entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed from Region 1 and will be playing its fourth straight road game in the Metro Atlanta area. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Walton’s Raider Valley.

No. 5-ranked Walton (13-0) defeated No. 4 Carrollton 56-35 in the third round. Unranked Camden County (10-3) defeated No. 1-ranked Mill Creek, the defending state champions, 39-10 in the quarterfinal round.

Camden County is making its first trip to the state semifinals since it won back-to-back titles in 2008-09. That was during coach Jeff Herron’s first stint with the Wildcats, when they won 12 region championships in 13 seasons from 2000-12. Herron is in the third year of his second term with the program.

Walton last played in the state semifinals two years ago, where it lost to Milton 52-17. The Raiders are coached by Daniel Brunner, who is in his seventh season and has taken them to at least the second round each year.

The game will be a homecoming for Herron, who began his career at Walton in 1989. He went 8-4 and took the Raiders to the region championship game in his lone season at the school.

This will be the third meeting between the two schools. Walton won 40-30 in the first round of the 2018 playoffs and Camden County won 45-14 in the 2005 Corky Kell Classic.
