There was no movement at the top of the GPB Football Rankings this week, but several schools jumped back into the rankings, some for the first time.

Holding onto the No. 1 spots were Mill Creek in Class 7A, Gainesville in 6A, Cartersville in 5A, Benedictine in 4A, Calvary Day in 3A, Thomson in 2A, Prince Avenue Christian in Class A Division I and Schley County in Class A Division II.

Entering or re-entering the rankings were: Westlake at No. 9 in 7A; Greater Atlanta Christian at No. 9, and Harris County at No. 10 in 5A; Starr’s Mill at No. 9 and Stephenson at No. 10 in Class 4A; Sandy Creek at No. 9 and Adairsville at No. 10 in 3A; Cook at No. 10 in 2A; Brooks County at No. 10 in Class A Division I; and Aquinas at No. 7 in Class A Division II.

With one week remaining before the playoffs begin, 38 region championships have been decided. That leaves the potential for a lot of drama as schools fight to get one of the coveted four state playoff spots in each region.

“All that leaves is 28 championships, right?” asked GPB’s Jon Nelson. “And there are a few regions where there are tiebreakers and math. And then we may not have any answers in some places where math may not be the final answer.

"Does anyone have a mini-game in their regions come Monday evening? Someone let me know. I can't wait to start filling out brackets in pen.”

The only real drama this week comes from Class 2A, where Cook mustered enough support to move into the No. 10 spot after knocking off Fitzgerald. The issue with the voters was the cloud of uncertainty hanging over Cook’s postseason prospects because of the impending forfeiture of five games due to an eligibility issue. Cook is appealing the ruling to the GHSA’s Board of Trustees after losing its initial appeal. If the final appeal is denied, the Hornets will miss the playoffs for the first time in 22 years.
