There is a new No. 1 team in Class 3A.

Cedar Grove had held the position all season, despite losing games to powers Monarch (Fla.), Class 7A No. 2 Colquitt County, No. 4 Mill Creek and No. 9 Westlake. But when the Saints lost to mighty Carver of Montgomery, Ala., last weekend and dropped to 2-5, the voters in the GPB poll took notice and dropped them out of the top spot – and all the way to No. 2.

The new No. 1 team is Calvary Day of Savannah, which improved its record to 7-0 by defeating Groves 60-0. The Cavaliers, coached by Mark Stroud, have won each of their games by an average of 45.3 points. Their closest call was a 42-21 win over No. 5 Savannah Christian.

Calvary Day and Cedar Grove are familiar with each other. Cedar Grove beat the Cavaliers 30-0 in the state quarterfinal round a year ago when the teams were ranked No. 1 and No. 2. Cedar Grove went on to finish second in the state.

There was no movement atop any of the other classification. Remaining No. 1 were Class 7A Buford, 6A Gainesville, 5A Cartersville, 4A Benedictine, 2A Thomson, Class A Division I Prince Avenue Christian and Class A Division II Schley County.

With many schools taking a week off for fall break, there was little movement in any of the rankings. Carver Columbus jumped back into the 3A poll at No. 10 and Mount Vernon made its first appearance in the rankings at No. 10 in Class A Division I.
