Travis Franklin scored on a 1-yard run with 50 seconds remaining to give No. 4 Sandy Creek a 21-17 win over No. 1-ranked and defending champion Cedar Grove in the Class 3A title game on Saturday at Georgia State’s Center Parc Stadium.

It was the second touchdown for Franklin, the other also on a 1-yard run. Franklin also led the defense with nine tackles.

The Patriots (13-2) drove 70 yards in 12 plays to score the winning touchdown. Sandy Creek then doused any hopes of a Cedar Grove comeback when Kaleb Cost intercepted a pass with 20 seconds left to seal the outcome.

It was Sandy Creek’s first championship since 2012 and the first for coach Brett Garvin. It also avenged a 49-34 regular-season loss to Cedar Grove.

Cedar Grove (11-3) scored on a 7-yard run by Quinterio Lawson, a 36-yard field goal from Amari Forte and a 20-yard run by Ricky Lee, who led the team with 68 yards rushing. Quarterback Elliott Colson threw for 33 yards, none longer than 8 yards, and ran for 64 yards. Lawson led the defense with 10 tackles.

Sandy Creek quarterback Geimere Latimer completed 14 of 25 passes for 174 yards and ran 10 times for 53 yards and one touchdown, a 10-yard run. Cameron Watts caught seven oases for 93 yards.
