After a week off, the game is again afoot in south Georgia and in one of the toughest regions not just in Georgia, but in the entire country.  I am talking about Region 1, 6A.  And one of the biggest matchups will pit top ranked, undefeated, defending 6A champion, and 5-0 Colquitt County, against 4-1 and five time state champion Lowndes.  This game will be played on the Vikings home turf and you can believe that the fans that support the Crimson and White will be really ready to cheer on their team. “It will be a full house, and the fans will be really fired up for this one” says Vikings coach Randy McPherson now in his 14th season.  Coach McPherson has posted a sparkling 134-33 record in those 14 seasons and has won three state titles in 2004, 2005, and 2007.

This year the Vikings were on GPB Football Fridays in Georgia when they played Roswell in August. The Vikings lost that one, but have reeled off 4 straight wins since. “We have a solid team, a  young team, that is getting better each and every week.  It is a work in progress because we have a lot of young players, but those players have a lot of potential.”

This week, the Vikings face a big challenge in teeing it up with the number one ranked team in the state, the Colquitt County Packers. “This is a big game, they are a very good team and have played very well. They have a very good quarterback and what we have to do is try to eliminate the big play. We are not going to stop em, but we have to keep them in front of us, and don’t give up the big one”

Several Vikings are having big years led by senior quarterback Austin Dixon who has completed 59 of 78 passes for 704 yards, 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions.  Others players competing at high levels include offensive linemen Nate Lee and  Tarik Adams, and wide out Xavier Jenkins. Defensively, linebacker Logan Neeley and defensive back Tyson Harris have been leading the way.

Region 1,6A is loaded with talented teams each year.  Other region games this week are Camden County at Valdosta, and Tift County at Lee County. “There is always great competition in this region, but I feel that the region title is really up for grabs, and I would be shocked if any team ran the table”

The road to the Georgia Dome really kicks off in earnest this week in region 1, 6A, and many many times that road has run through south Georgia.   And trust me fans, it’s going to be  a lot of fun to watch.
