Pancks busies himself with more investigating, proceeding to recruit John Chivery to help him with his enquiries. Arthur returns to Twickenham to propose to Pet. Tattycoram decides that she has had enough of being ordered about, and she storms out. Meagles, deeply concerned for her welfare, enlists Arthur to help find her. Rigaud visits Mrs Clennam's house, pretending that he's come on business.
