For the second year in a row, Atlanta will go without its yearly Pride parade this October because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The delta variant of the virus has led to hospitals being overwhelmed across the state.

"In recent years the Atlanta Pride Celebration brought over 350,000 people together for Atlanta Pride weekend," the organizers wrote in a statement obtained by GPB News. "With the knowledge that we are unable to secure permitting for an event of our size and with the expectation that the delta surge will continue for weeks ahead, APC makes this decision with a heavy heart."

The event, which is held in October — atypical from some other cities around the country which celebrate during the LGBTQ Pride Month of June — has gained added significance in recent years as a political spotlight has been cast on queer Georgians, especially transgender youth.

"In the interim, we ask everyone to do their part by getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, and to follow all public health guidance so we can gather together for the Atlanta Pride Celebration in 2022," the statement continued.

The news was met with equal frustration and support for the organizers and the city of Atlanta on social media.

Another large-scale event, Dragon Con, is still scheduled to go forward on Labor Day weekend — albeit at a reduced capacity. The convention announced last week it will now require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test for entry.
