Several athletes from Georgia will compete in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo — including Kelley O’Hara, of Fayetteville, and Emily Sonnett, of Marietta for the U.S. Women's Soccer team.

This is O'Hara's third trip to the Olympics. For Sonnett, it will be her first.

“We have a very experienced roster that has been through adversity at the highest levels, so it’s no surprise those players have distinguished themselves," said head coach of the National team Vlatko Andonovski. "They’ve embraced the challenges and have shown tremendous flexibility and determination over the past 15 months to get us to where we are today.”

Both O'Hara and Sonnett currently play for the Washington Spirit.

The team is scheduled to play two exhibition matches prior to the Olympics on July 1 and July 5 in Mexico.

The U.S. Olympic Women’s Soccer Team has advanced to the gold medal game of every Olympic Women’s Soccer Tournament until 2016, when it lost to Sweden.

Notably, the team won its inaugural gold medal in Atlanta in 1996.

The Olympics are slated to begin July 23 in Tokyo – although lingering concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and a rising spike of cases in Japan have clouded this year’s proceedings.
