There is a lot of important news going on. Yet, this last week so many headlines were dominated by the news in Britain — not about Brexit, but “Megxit.” More accurately, the response to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s surprise decision to step back from their duties as “senior” royals.
The move has revealed a range of opinions about monarchy, race, class and media — not just in Britain, but also here in the U.S.
"On Second Thought" host Virginia Prescott speaks with Patrick Allitt and Lisa Respers France.
To unpack the greater context and history of the Sussex’s choice, and why we’re so fascinated by royal life, On Second Thought brought in two experts. Patrick Allitt is a history professor at Emory University. Lisa Respers France is a senior entertainment writer for CNN.
“Harry has been very open from the beginning that he was not going to be your typical monarch. He’s not going to be your typical prince at all,” France explained. “He definitely seems like he’s trying to protect his family from the fate his mother had to deal with.”
