On Saturday, The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Southeast Chapter announced the winners of the 45th Annual Southeast EMMY Awards at a special ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead in Atlanta. GPB Education productions were nominated in two categories, taking home a win in the Children/Youth (All Ages) category for its PBS KIDS Young Writers Contest

The program showcases stories from each student finalist in the 2018 K-3 GPB PBS KIDS Writers Contest, as well as teachers and children’s authors who discuss the importance of creative expression through writing.

“The real winners are those kids. We had so many kids submit stories [in GPB’s PBS KIDS Writers Contest],” said Director of GPB Education Laura Evans in her acceptance speech. “Their stories were amazing and imaginative, and this is what you see in this program.”

Winners were announced in 86 categories, including investigative reporting, health/science, and sports, among others.

This year’s contest had more than 1,300 entries from a five-state region, the most entered EMMY Awards season in the organization’s history. Entrants from TV stations and digital media organizations in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and North Carolina were eligible.
