In 2024, the Georgia Department of Public Health reported six measles cases. Georgia's number of measles cases in 2025 has now grown to five.
Six total cases of measles were reported last year, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH). 2025 has now nearly matched that.
As of June 6, the state has reported five cases of measles, most which affected one Atlanta-area family that contracted the disease outside the United States.
Two of the family's cases were previously reported in May. The third and newest is from the same family.
None of the three family members received the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.
More than 95% of the people who receive a single dose of MMR will develop immunity to all three viruses, and a second dose boosts immunity, typically enhancing protection to 98%, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Individuals who may have been exposed to either of these persons have been given the MMR vaccine or antibodies to help reduce the risk of developing measles and are being monitored for symptoms.
Currently, no new cases of measles have been reported in Georgia outside of this family.
