In this June, 19, 2018 photo, several ship to shore cranes stack shipping containers on-board the container ship Maersk Semarang at the Port of Savannah in Savannah, Ga. The Georgia Ports Authority reported Tuesday, July 30, 2019, that its ports at Savannah and Brunswick handled a record 37.5 million tons (34 million metric tons) of cargo in the 2019 fiscal year that ended June 30. That's a 4.2% increase over the previous year.

Savannah port breaks cargo records amid import surge

The Georgia Ports Authority said Tuesday that its docks in Savannah handled nearly 5.8 million container units of imports and exports in the fiscal year that ended June 30. That's an increase of 8% from a year ago, when Savannah exceeded 5 million container units for the first time.

Revolutionary find: 19 cannons in Savannah River likely sunk in 1779

A warehouse in coastal Georgia is holding historical treasures that evidence suggests were lost for more than 240 years. Crews dredging the Savannah River downstream from the city of Savannah last year dug up three cannons that archaeologists believe came from British ships scuttled in the river during the American Revolution.
