The US could see shortages and higher retail prices if a dockworkers strike drags on

U.S. ports from Maine to Texas are closed due to a strike by the union representing about 45,000 dockworkers. The International Longshoremen's Association is demanding higher wages and a total ban on the automation of cranes, gates and trucks that are used in the loading or unloading of freight at 36 U.S. ports.

The Georgia Ports Authority says it handled a record number of automobiles on its docks last year. The state agency reported Tuesday that more than 775,000 autos and heavy machinery units moved through the Port of Brunswick in the 2023 calendar year.

The 255-foot-tall crane vessel VB 10,000 sits astride what remains of the shipwreck of the Golden Ray in the St. Simons Sound in early May. The 656-foot-long car carrier overturned Sept. 8, 2019, while heading out to sea with a cargo of 4,200 vehicles. Four sections have been removed, sheared off by a massive anchor chain muscled up through the shipwreck’s steel exterior and 12 interior decks by the VB 10,000’s powerful system of winches and pulleys.
