Court documents reveal new details of killing of nursing student at University of Georgia

The suspect in the killing of a nursing student on the University of Georgia campus used an object as a weapon in the crime and is accused of "disfiguring her skull." That's according to newly filed arrest affidavits. Jose Ibarra faces multiple murder and assault charges in the death of 22-year-old Laken Riley.

Georgia lawmakers hold out hope for bill that would restrict publication of mugshots

Georgians who have not been convicted of a crime have lost their jobs and reputations because of their posted mugshot — sometimes for something as minor as a parking ticket. Lawmakers are looking to do something about it.

Georgia lawmakers push immigration bills in response to former UGA student’s death

The killing of 22-year-old Laken Riley on the University of Georgia campus last week shocked and horrified people far beyond Athens. On Monday, the immigration status of the suspect in her killing reignited a debate over immigration policy in the Georgia Legislature and appears to have increased the odds of immigration-related legislation becoming state law.

Hundreds of students and faculty members gathered Monday afternoon on the University of Georgia's campus for a vigil for two students who died last week.

Georgia lawmakers gave final approval yesterday to the nearly $38 billion midyear budget.

Parents of kids under 16 would have to give their kids permissions to access certain social media accounts, under a bill passed by the state Senate Monday.

Update: Sinkhole swallows sign, threatens restaurants on Atlanta's Peachtree Road

What began as a deep but much smaller hole in front of Sufi’s Kitchen on Peachtree Road in Buckhead on Friday, has now turned into a large sinkhole that swallowed the Persian restaurant’s sign on Monday afternoon. It’s also threatening neighboring restaurants R. Thomas Deluxe Grille and Bell Street Burritos as well as the southbound lanes of Peachtree Road.

UPDATE: Atlanta RaceTrac store near GSU closes; family of woman killed in 2023 shooting files suit

RaceTrac released a statement Feb. 26 announcing the closure, after multiple shootings occurred on the block. On Feb. 29, the family of a woman shot and killed near the gas station announced a lawsuit against RaceTrac, The Mix apartments and other entities, alleging negligence.

Police investigating fatal shooting near GSU campus

According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to 120 Piedmont Avenue NE in reference to a person shot just before 12:45 p.m. The address is for The Mix, which is listed as student apartments, and adjacent to the RaceTrac gas station where other shooting incidents have occurred over the last year.
