Wildfires threatened endangered species found only in two counties

When wildfires erupted in South Georgia last month, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources was one of several state agencies that pitched in to fight them. The DNR sent heavy equipment and a couple dozen staffers to strengthen the fire lines, said Matt Elliott, Chief, Wildlife Conservation at the Wildlife Resources Division.

A wildfire in Southeast Georgia continues largely uncontained even after destroying dozens of homes and prompting the Federal Emergency Management Agency to unlock disaster aid.

Brantley County residents still hope to lay waste to landfill OK’d by state EPD

Local officials say they were led to believe a 100-acre landfill project was a waste-to-energy plant. When prompted, top county leaders issued letters in 2014 and again in 2015 saying a solid waste handling facility would fit with local planning rules — approval county leaders are desperately trying to claw back now.
