Former Black Panther Party official H. Rap Brown has died in a prison hospital after being convicted nearly 25 years ago in the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia. He was 82.

Assata Shakur, a Black liberation activist who was given political asylum in Cuba after her 1979 escape from a U.S. prison, has died. Officials in New Jersey, where Shakur had been arrested, convicted and imprisoned, said she was 78.

The agency surveilled Franklin and those around her to gauge how deeply she was involved in organizations tied to Communism, the civil rights movement and the Black Power movement.
