LISTEN: Atlanta's housing authority is offering 20 years of property tax relief to seniors to help them age in place, but the deadline to apply is coming up soon. GPB's Amanda Andrews reports.
Former Atlanta Housing Government Affairs director Wayne Martin held a press conference May 18, 2025, urging seniors in the community to apply for a city tax relief program.
Atlanta Housing Authority is offering 20 years of property tax relief to seniors to help them stay in their homes.
The Anti Displacement Tax Relief Fund is open to residents over age 60 making less than $48,000 a year and who have lived in Atlanta since at least 2015. The program freezes residents property taxes and covers any increase for the next 20 years.
Wayne Martin, who's running for Atlanta City Council, said this tax relief helps the community grow.
“It welcomes and invites, you know, new resident to move in,” Martin said. “It welcomes and invites new commercial development, without adding shock value to our senior citizens who have fixed incomes and do not experience rising incomes at the same level as younger residents."
The initiative is a partnership between the city and Invest Atlanta, the official economic development authority for the city. The program received an initial $10 million from the Centennial Yard Housing Trust fund to prevent displacement.
Martin said programs like this make the city better for people of all ages.
“I believe that our senior residents are really the heart and soul of Atlanta," he said. "They've made Atlanta what it is, the reason why so many young people like myself who were raised here stay here.”
The deadline to apply is May 31. More information can be found through Invest Atlanta.
