29 student athletes have tested positive for COVID-19 at Mercer University in Macon only two weeks before the school plans to fully reopen with face to face instruction.

The athletes were among the 35 students out of 316 tested between the 31st of July and August 3rd who tested positive for the coronavirus. That’s a positivity rate of 11%, twice the rate of 5% considered adequate for knowing the full spread of the virus in a community.

In a press release, Mercer University said all the COVID positive students are in isolation with either mild symptoms or, in most cases, with no symptoms at all. Close contacts of the infected are being offered tests from Mercer’s on-campus lab.

Mercer is asking all its students, including around 4,000 undergraduates, to get tested before returning to campus by August 18 when the university plans on full in person instruction.
