The Atlanta fire and police departments responded Saturday morning to reports of fire and damage inside the Target on Sidney Marcus Boulevard in Buckhead.

Battalion Chief Mitchell said AFD got word of a "smoldering fire inside the store." The fire department responded to the call at 10 a.m.

Heavy smoke could be smelled from blocks away.

Officer Armando Silva, one of the first police to arrive at the scene, said he received word of looting and damage inside the store, but could not confirm the reports.

Several employees who identified themselves as Target management were on scene, but declined to comment.

The fire comes after a night of protests rocked the city of Atlanta. The demonstrations initially began at Centennial Olympic Park downtown, but tensions escalated into the Buckhead area as the night drew on. Lenox Mall, Phipps Plaza, Del Frisco's Grille, and another Target in the area saw looting and damage overnight.
