Former Democratic candidate for governor Stacey Evans has announced she will run for a soon-to-be vacated House seat in Atlanta.

Evans served for seven years in a Cobb County-based House district and lost to Stacey Abrams in the gubernatorial primary.

She's seeking to replace Rep. Pat Gardner (D-Atlanta), who has held the District 57 seat since 2001.

"I know first-hand the importance of wise, experienced representation for this district," she said. "I bring the experience and determination needed to get things done from the very beginning. I know because I've done it before.

The attorney also said in a press release that she was spurred to re-enter the political fray because of policies such as gun rights, health care reform and Georgia's recently-passed restrictions on abortion rights, something a federal judge has temporarily blocked.

"As a mother of two, I cannot be idle as Republicans in our state treat women's rights as a political football and refuse to act as our children are gunned down at school," she said. "I can't sit quietly as those same Republicans block access to health care for thousands of Georgians and try to strip away our fellow citizens' equal protections under the guise of so-called 'religious freedom' legislation."

Evans told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution another priority is expanding the HOPE scholarship for college students, a program she credited with jumpstarting her into a career in law and public service.

Democrats are looking to regain control of the House chamber by winning 16 Republican-controlled seats next year, primarily in the demographically and politically-shifting suburbs of Atlanta.
