Atlanta-based author and primatologist Frans de Waal has observed animal behavior for 40 years. He's since challenged prevailing scientific notions of animals as stimulus response machines. His new book, Mama's Last Hug: Animal Emotions, details findings on jealousy and reconciliation.

On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott speaks with Frans de Waal.

De Waal is also a psychology professor at Emory University and director of the Living Links Center at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta.

De Waal will be at the AJC Decatur Book Festival Sept. 1.

He stopped by On Second Thought to talk about his book and work with animals.
