Whether celebrated joyfully or begrudgingly, Valentine's Day is the holiday when the varieties of love – or the absence of love – come sharply into focus.

"On Second Thought" marks the day with "An American Marriage" author and Atlanta native Tayari Jones. The story of an Atlanta couple bound together – and torn apart – by a skewed criminal justice system, "An American Marriage" reminds us that no love exists in a vacuum.

"On Second Thought" host Virginia Prescott speaks with Tayari Jones.

Oprah chose "An American Marriage" for her book club and former President Barack Obama called it one of his favorite books of 2018. It was also named among the best books of the year by a number of critics, including the National Book Foundation.

Jones joined "On Second Thought" for a conversation about growing up in Atlanta, honing her craft with Pearl Cleage at Spelman College and returning home to teach at Emory University following the success of "An American Marriage."

Jones will be at Emory University Feb. 19 for a reading of "An American Marriage," now out in paperback.
