Political Rewind: Beth Macy’s Revelatory Journey Through The Heart of The Opioid Crisis
On this edition of Political Rewind, for six years, Roanoke-based journalist Beth Macy watched the opioid crisis unfold in struggling Appalachian communities all around her. And so she began documenting the roles that a pharmaceutical industry hungry for profit, medical practitioners intent on easing pain and government agencies slow to recognize the crisis all played in allowing a devastating plague of addiction to grip the entire region.
Beyond documenting the institutions that either contributed to the crisis or failed to recognize how pervasive it was, Beth wanted to put a face on the tragedies that addiction has brought to countless families who’ve lost loved ones to pills and heroin.
The result of her investigation is her new book "Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America." Bill talks to Beth on this special edition of the show.
