Aboard a ship

The captain of a container ship leads an international crew delivering cargo to ports all over the world. But when it comes to pulling that ship up to a dock like the Port of Savannah, the job takes more of a local touch. Two people from Savannah – called “pilots” – board every ship that comes to the port. One navigates from the ocean into the river, past the islands and downtown Savannah. The other docks the ship at the port. GPB’s Emily Jones climbed aboard a ship to see the team at work.

Meet a crane operator at the port.

Meet one of the truck drivers who hauls Savannah's cargo.
