When your boss doesn’t like you, one of things he or she will probably do is spend less time with you. To turn things around, though, you HAVE to spend time together.

“You can’t change that [negative] impression they have of you if you can’t get face time,” said Brandon Smith, a workplace consultant who also teaches about workplace culture at Emory and Georgia State universities. “So get face time, but minimize the face time.”

Huh?

“If they don’t like you, the last thing they want to do is spend an hour and a half with you or two hours with you. Don’t try to make up for lost time by having a huge lunch meeting,” he said.

Instead, Smith advocated that employees have more frequent interactions that are brief and positive.

That’s one of the suggestions Smith offered in a follow-up to our conversation last week about the signs your boss doesn’t like you.

He has a few others to try before you give up and try to find another place to work in this week’s Working on GPB Radio. (Because, if you can’t repair your relationship with your boss, that’s what you’re going to have to do, Smith said.)
