Growing up Tony Evans Jr.'s family was convinced he'd be a country singer someday, but not Tony. He says he "just didn't see it as cool at the time." In this episode, we'll find out how his musical journey took him from signing his first deal at 11 years old to embracing the sound that comes naturally to him.

On His Style of Country Music

Tony Evans Jr: Yeah. My name is Tony Evans Jr. I'm from Stockbridge, Georgia, and I sing country music.

Jeremy Powell: What brand of country music?

Tony Evans Jr: My own brand of country music.

Jeremy Powell: Is that what it is?

Tony Evans Jr: Yeah. Yeah. Okay. It's like I hate naming stuff, so I'm never going to name it, but it's just a mix of the music that I grew up listening to George Strait and some Keith Whitley vibes and you know, those type artists with my thing, you know, being from where I'm from. And it's just a feeling that I like giving to it. And that's how I describe it.

On Family

Tony Evans Jr: Family is everything. Family means absolutely everything. As a man, I have nothing without family. You know, I have nothing to protect. I have nothing to provide for. You know, I have nothing to...no responsibility. I feel like, you know, like I want to be great so my family can be proud of me. So, yeah, family's everything.

Jeremy Powell: Is this the feeling that you've had ever since you started trying music? Is that you want to do this for your family, to honor your family?

Tony Evans Jr: I think I started feeling that way when I was around maybe like 15, when as I started to grow up and I started trying. I started seeking that responsibility as a man, like trying to find what I wanted to live for. I realized that, you know, even though I do music and I love music and it's my passion, I really do it for the people that I love. You know, that's what drives me. Love and music isn't enough to do this career. You know, You got to have something that really grounds you and drives you.

On Being An African-American in the Country Music Scene

Jeremy Powell: Singing country music. It seems like some people want to point out that you're a black guy.

Tony Evans Jr: Yeah.

Jeremy Powell: Rather than that you're a phenomenal songwriter.

Tony Evans Jr: That's kind of annoying sometimes. But I guess it's just the state of the world right now. You know, everything's about color. Which isn't my favorite thing to go through and talk about and all that type stuff. But at the same time, I guess it is kind of hard to ignore because there are so few faces in country music that look like me. So I kind of just take it for what it is.
