Winning a state championship is etched into the culture of some high school football programs around the state, while others can only dream of one day hoisting the trophy at Mercedes Benz Stadium. For the dreamers, that elusive championship could be a once in a lifetime opportunity, and for the rare few… the trophies keep coming year after year. As the football season draws nearer, so does the chance of winning that title and it all begins during spring practice.

GPB’s Hannah Goodin and Jon Nelson caught up with three head coaches from three different programs, coming off of three very different seasons, to see how each coach goes about laying the groundwork for a state title during the off-season. Preparations vary drastically from town to town, so let’s pull back the curtain and find out how Langston Hughes head coach Boone Williams, Peach County new head coach Marquis Westbrook and Colquitt County head coach Sean Calhoun prepare for the fall.

First up is coach Boone, who led the Panthers to their first ever state title after taking down Gainesville 35-28 in the 2022 GHSA 6A State Championship game. The title was also coach Boone’s first.

Next up is coach Westbrook who led Warner Robins to back-to-back state championships in 2020 and 2021 and made it to the final game of the year four seasons in a row with the Demons. He recently accepted a new head coaching opportunity with Peach County where he will learn a new program while also trying to implement a championship mentality.

Lastly, we hear from coach Calhoun who’s in his second year at the helm of the Colquitt County program. The Packers made a deep playoff run in 2022 but were knocked out by Carrollton in the semifinals. Packer Nation loves a winner but they haven't seen a title in Moultrie since 2015, so coach Calhoun is hoping that this is the year.
