There was a cool moment that was started over this last week…

I say “started” because the name of Panthersville Stadium is being changed up on the marquee. The new name will be Buck Godfrey Stadium- and rightfully so. Godfrey, the longtime coach at Southwest DeKalb, went 273-89-1 in his tenure with the Panthers making him the winningest coach in county school history. He’s an author and poet and he gets what high school sports are all about.

He faced discrimination as a kid- as a little leaguer- and played on, a lot of people think, one of the best little league baseball teams that ever took the field to try and win a title in Williamsport.

There are few high school coaches that we can refer to as a “Renaissance Man” and, actually, know that the term is accurate.

For Godfrey, it is… and having conversations with him about topics other than football are always cool.

Now, to the Week That Was… and I think it was one of those weeks that the teams that stumbled regained their footing and others tried to play catch-up…

The teams in region 1-6A were the ones that played before this off-week and the beginning of region play. Alcovy, Wayne County, Terrell County, and Pelham all felt the wrath of larger squads. Grayson brought Parkview back to earth and there were a lot of zeroes issued on defense…

But, down in south Georgia, Jake is in the “Locker Room” where he starts off discussing Bainbridge and Thomas County Central and visits everything in between…

In central Georgia, if you look at the middle of the state (and in one of the goofiest region maps of the state), you’ll still see four teams ranked from one group- Warner Robins, Northside, Houston County, and Jones County. The folks in Gray show up for their Greyhounds all year long.

Frank and Suzanne have the proof…

Over in the east one team made a statement, another team gave us all a shocking result, and the team that was the focus of “Backroads and Backfields” last week has now won more games this year than they did all last year.

Last stop this time is the left coast where Carver, Greenville, and Columbus- yes, Columbus- are getting into the win column. Here’s Dave and Tall Paul…

This week, on “Football Fridays” it’s another trip to Memorial Stadium for two teams that are rebuilding- and are in different stages of doing it… Tucker and their Wing-T offense is going to host MLK and the Lions program that is trying to come from a long way back in the county landscape.

Nick Kashama has a big job ahead of him and it’s tough sledding. The question is: How will they respond in Clarkston…?

Join Jackie and Mark on the “All-Access Pass” show at 7 with kickoff a little after 7:30 with Matt and Larry. Rayven and I will be along as well, so like us, friend us, and be a part of the conversation on Facebook (GPB Sports), twitter (@GPBSports), Snapchat, and every other way possible in game.

Download the GPB Sports app on your iPhone and bookmark GPB.org/sports for the most up-to-date info from the GPB Sports team all season long.

Play it safe, everyone… I’ll see you at the stadium…
