In a recent interview with Head Coach Rush Propst of the Colquitt County Packers, a team ranked No. 1 in the state and highly-rated nationally as well, he and I discussed the chances this year’s Packer team has to finally bring home a state title in Class AAAAAA. His Colquitt County teams have made it to the GHSA finals or semifinals, followed by losing to the eventual state champion five straight years. But that elusive title is still out there for the taking.

“I think we have a good chance to win a state title this year,” said Propst. “But several other teams in 6-A are capable too!”

Propst named several teams including Valdosta, Grayson, Norcross, Lowndes, Dacula, McEachern, North Gwinnett, Camden County and many others which all have a shot at the state’s top AAAAAA trophy this year.

“We need to keep things in focus…we first have to beat Valdosta at their place this week and then we get to take a week off. Then we’ve still got two more region games to go…after our week off we have to play a very tough Tift County team on the road and then Camden County at home before we start thinking about anything statewide.”

After two weeks of play in Region 1-AAAAAA, the Packers and the Valdosta Wildcats are tied for first place, and the winner of this game will have the inside track to a region championship. There have already been some shockers in Region 1-AAAAAA thus far, and the next few weeks will be very interesting as those six teams fight it out for four playoff spots.

I also asked Propst for his thoughts on a proposed high school national championship game which is slated to be played December 27 this year at Boca Raton's Florida Atlantic University. The game would feature Florida’s top three teams and three other teams from across the country such as Nevada and South Carolina.

“I would like to see a Georgia team in that group of games in December. If we won a state title…we would love to be a part of that,” said Propst. “Buford and some of our other nationally ranked teams would be good choices to play in those games down there too…I think the television ratings would be fantastic for those high school championship games.”

The regular season battles continue this week in Region 1-AAAAAA as Lowndes travels to Lee County and Camden County hosts Tift County.
