Georgia's Mock Trial Team State Champs (via their Facebook page)

Students from around the country are gathering today for the National Mock Trial competition in Indianapolis, Indiana, which begins tomorrow. Georgia’s representative team hails from the very center of the state in Macon, Georgia. However, the teens don’t go to a school. That is to say, they are being educated outside of traditional classrooms.

For the first time, Georgia is being represented at the National Mock Trial by a Home School team, specifically, The Middle Georgia Christian Home School. There are a few other home school teams also competing nationally this year, so it isn’t a new precedent. It’s also not a real shock that this team won the State Championship for Mock Trial. According to their coach, Richard Ricks, he’s led the team to regional champs and state finalists in the six years since he started coaching. Ricks says they are also the first midstate team to represent Georgia in the National Mock Trial.

The group has a Facebook page if you’d like to leave an encouraging message for the group of 14 teens. I’m also hoping they’ll use the page to keep us updated on their progress.
