Macon DJ Roger Riddle and Y-O Latimore of Poetic Peace Arts join us to talk about fun things to do in Middle Georgia over the weekend and beyond.

Roger's picks for August 22:

Ocmulgee Monument Butterfly Bio Blitz

The Ocmulgee National Monument is 702 acres of land filled with Native American history, forests, and wildlife. This Saturday the monument invites us to play scientist and observer some of the wildlife by conducting field observations and counting butterflies along the trails. They are calling this event the Butterfly Bio Blitz and this is their very first event of this kind with plans to do future bio blitzs with other species. Participants receive a t-shirt and water bottle and the park will provide cameras, binoculars, and field guides while supplies last. They suggest you bring bug spray and sunscreen and that you wear long pants and closed toe shoes so that when you get off the path to chase down those butterflies, you stay protected. Kids will be able to get in some finger painting and even make a butterfly sun catcher. This event is free and starts at 9am and runs til 4pm this Saturday August 24th.

Weaver's Weekend

Macon Beer Fest is this Saturday from 3pm – 7pm and you got out and tasted all the great beers and ate some great food. You aren't quite ready to go home, so what are you going to do? Go hear some live music! Weaver's Weekend is becoming and annual music do event bringing great bands for night that helps raise money for a really good cause. This year the event happens to fall on the same day as Beer Fest. This year the Weavers bring Athens Georgia's Futurebirds as well as my favorite band from Bragg Jam, Thomas Wynn and The Believers. While we already know Thomas Wynn is hard driving rock reminiscent of the classic sounds of CCR. Futurebirds will please fans of My Morning Jacket. All proceeds to this event help to fund youth sports projects around the city. Tickets are $20 and this year, Weaver's Weekend is at The Crazy Bull. It all starts at 8pm.

Y-O's picks for August 22:

If you like the blues and southern rock and roll, you'll want to know about Freddy's Finest f/t Tommy Talton and Kofi Burbridge playing live at the Cox Capitol Theatre Saturday, August 24 at 9 p.m. The members of the band are Michael "Hurly" Hurwitz on the bass from Waycross, Georgia, Ian Newberry on the guitar from Dallas, Georgia, Spencer Pope on the keyboards and Will Groth on the drums. The great Tommy Talton and Kofi Burbridge will front and join the band. For more information, log on to www.coxcapitoltheatre.com.

Now, Friday, August 23, you can step out to the Tubman African American Museum for the opening reception of the exhibit Pack A Pistol: A SMOKE School of Art Exhibition from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The artist will reveal why they title the gallery display Pack A Pistol at the opening reception. Dean Brown and Dubshack will be performing live and light refreshments will be served. This group of twelve modern artists refer to the SMOKE School of Art as "an Atlanta-based think tank that discussed and addresses contemporary philosophy and issues in modern art and culture." They label themselves as post-colonialist art makers. I think this exhibit is going to stimulate a lot of interest. For more information, log on to www.tubmanmuseum.com.
