A jury has found a Dougherty County school board member not guilty on felony school lunch fraud charges.

Velvet Riggins was resolved of the charges on Friday after the jury took about an hour to deliberate before handing out a not guilty verdict.

Riggins was arrested in December and charged with two misdemeanors and a felony — two counts of theft by taking and providing false information to obtain free school meals for child.

On Thursday, Judge Stephen Gross threw out count one — public fraud, which is a felony — at the request of the defense.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed an executive order in July to remove Riggins from her office, pending the outcome of the trial.
