A leading organization for older Americans is designating Macon and surrounding Bibb County as an "age-friendly" community.

AARP will make the announcement during a news conference Wednesday in Macon.

Macon is the first of seven U.S. communities to receive the designation, which signifies areas that try to be responsive to the needs of older people.

The six other cities receiving the label include New York City and Philadelphia.

Macon-Bibb is establishing an advisory citizens committee and setting up workshops conducted by the AARP.
