Students in districts across Georgia are ending their summer vacations and heading back to the classroom.

Monday marks the start of the school year for students in the city of Atlanta as well as districts in Gwinnett, Douglas, Butts, Coweta, Heard, Henry, Lamar and Pike counties.

Students and teachers will be adjusting this year to a new set of common academic standards adopted by Georgia and 46 other states. The standards in math, English and language arts are supposed to define what students learn at each grade level.

Georgia is also waiving its collection of the sales tax on Aug. 10-11 on back-to-school goods including clothing, computers and other common school supplies.
